In neurodivergent spaces, Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria (RSD) is widely recognized and discussed. Millions of individuals with ADHD and Autism recognize the acute, gut-wrenching physical pain triggered by perceived disapproval, failure, or social exclusion.
What remains largely unmapped in clinical discourse is RSD’s equally volatile biological opposite: Recognition Responsive Euphoria (RRE), sometimes referred to as Acceptance Sensitive Euphoria.
When an AuDHD person receives unexpected, sincere praise or high-status validation, their nervous system does not merely register gentle satisfaction.
Instead, their brain releases an explosive, intoxicating flood of dopamine and norepinephrine.
Within sixty seconds, the chronic exhaustion you felt ten minutes prior evaporates. Your depression lifts. You feel physically electric, profoundly capable, and completely invincible.
And that is precisely the moment the trap springs shut.
The Neurochemistry of The RRE Trap
Why does praise trigger such a violent emotional pendulum in neurodivergent brains?

- Chemical Starvation: Because AuDHD brains have fewer dopamine receptors and accelerated dopamine reuptake, sincere validation acts like a concentrated chemical elixir directly into the reward circuitry.
- The Amnesia of Exhaustion: While surfing an RRE high, your prefrontal cortex temporarily disconnects from physiological reality. You forget you have only twenty-four hours in a day, forget your somatic fatigue, and genuinely believe you can operate at this sprint tempo forever.
- The Overcommitment Trap: In this euphoric state, your boundaries disintegrate. You agree to lead a new committee, promise to build an entire software feature over the weekend, or offer to host a multi-day family gathering.
- The Inevitable Crash: Within 24 to 48 hours, the dopamine wave crests and crashes back to baseline. You wake up with empty reserves, staring at an unmeetable mountain of promises. The dread of letting people down activates acute RSD, throwing you into complete executive freeze.
The 3 Zero-Friction Protection Protocols
Surviving the praise-criticism polarity does not mean you must suppress your joy. It means building structural scaffolding around your neurochemical spikes.
Protocol 1: The Mandatory 24-Hour Commitment Freeze
- The Rule: You are barred from accepting ANY new project, commitment, or role within 24 hours of receiving significant praise or excitement.
- The Script: Never make an on-the-spot decision. Use this verbatim neutral phrase:
“Thank you so much! I am thrilled that you love the outcome. Let me look over my current delivery schedule and get back to you with confirmed bandwidth tomorrow morning by 10 AM.”
- This allows the phasic dopamine flood to clear so your decision is made by your rational baseline self, not your chemically intoxicated self.
Protocol 2: The 30% Energy Reality Audit
- Before confirming any commitment agreed to in concept, ask yourself:
“If I wake up next week at 30% baseline energy with brain fog, can I still complete this task without panic?”
- If the answer is no, scale back the scope immediately or decline.
Protocol 3: Decouple Survival from Approval
- Recognize that praise is enjoyable sociological data—it is not oxygen for your existential worth.
- Anchoring self-worth to internal process metrics rather than external applause prevents the pendulum from swinging into catastrophic RSD when praise inevitably stops.
